Fossil Fuels in a Net Zero World: A Dialogue across Three Perspectives

  • Climate Action Innovation Zone King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street Dubai, Dubai United Arab Emirates (map)

This event is organised in collaboration with Oxford Net Zero, AEON Collective and Clean Air Task Force.

In an era marked by the urgency of climate change, the question of fossil fuels looms large. This event probes the intricate relationship between energy needs, environmental imperatives, and modern civilisation. The phase-down or phase-out of unabated fossil fuels is not merely a technical issue but a profound societal challenge. What does abatement mean in this landscape, and how can it be translated into actionable paths?

This event focuses on what the science requires and tells us we need a robust definition of abatement, specifically the need for permanent and geological net zero for fossil fuel emissions and credible accounting. We invite three stakeholders to talk about ‘what’ and ‘how’ they consider the “abatement” of fossil fuels. The Science, Civil Society, and Industry perspectives will be presented as three short TED-style talks; audience participation on “how-to” implement this. Ultimately, our event will initiate a crucial, open and cross-sector dialogue on defining abatement and ambitious decarbonisation pathways.

Our speakers are:

  • Myles Allen, Professor of Geoscience System, University of Oxford

  • Princess Noura bint Turki Al-Saud, Co-Founder, AEON Collective

  • Armond Cohen , Executive Director, CATF
